Social media can do wonders for your business, if you know how to use it to its full potential.  One powerful way to harness the power of social media is to utilize it to boost your email campaigns.  After all, fans and followers are great—but actual subscribers are better, right?

If you want to get new or existing customers to opt in to your email list, your social media accounts are an easy and effective way to get started.  The key is to convert fans into subscribers, and some of the techniques are surprisingly simple.  Here are some tips:

Add an email opt-in widget.
A recent survey conducted by Adpropo reveals that almost 50% of respondents have a positive attitude toward email communications.  This beats all other marketing formats, including video, banner and mobile ads.  Given that email marketing is so popular with consumers, it's only logical to make it as easy as possible for them to opt in to your own email communications.  Add an email opt-in feature to your Facebook page—it’s simple to integrate into your account and can be extremely effective in increasing your number of subscribers.

Tweet about it.
Does your company have a strong presence on Twitter?  Your daily tweets are a good way to direct people to an email opt-in page on your site, so make sure to mix these tweets in with your other messages.  A shortened URL link to the page, along with a concise invitation that includes a compelling call to action, is a sure way to get the attention of loyal followers.

Entice people to follow your link by mentioning your latest promotions, sales or industry news headlines in your tweets.  Once they get to your page, make sure that the opt-in box is front and center on that page and visible on all other pages.

Connect with LinkedIn members .
You already know how LinkedIn can help grow your business, but are you getting the most out of it?  Studies show that over 80% of LinkedIn members belong to a group. These groups can help you target specific email messages to the people who want to see them.  So, consider starting or joining a group and posting discussion topics that include links to your email opt-in page.  Consider offering educational content, such as a white paper or ebook, in exchange for an opt-in on this page, as it's this kind of give-and-take that encourages people to sign up in the first place. Becoming part of a group and participating in these discussions combines the opportunity to showcase your knowledge and gain new subscribers at the same time.

Social media helps businesses increase email subscribers by making it easy to access offers and other valuable information.  Your fans are checking you out anyway, so why not capitalize on their interest with an email list that garners more leads, more sales, and more followers?  Use social media to boost your email contacts, and put the power of social networking to use for your business.
