So You Want to Rank #1 on Google?

Let’s talk about it. Honestly.

If you’re running a business, at some point you’ve probably said—or screamed into a pillow—“I just want to be #1 on Google!” And hey, we get it. That top spot looks shiny. But before we dive into what it takes to climb the ranks (and why it’s not always worth obsessing over), let’s start with a truth bomb:

No one can guarantee you a #1 ranking.
If someone promises that? Red flag.
They’re either lying, guessing, or playing fast and loose with tactics that could hurt you more than help you. Either way: run.

The Myth of #1 (And Why It’s Changing)

Back in the day, being #1 meant something very specific. You typed in a keyword, and boom: your site shows up first. Easy, right?

But now? Google is an evolving beast. With AI-generated answers, featured snippets, maps, ads, "People also ask" boxes, and everything else packed into search results, the traditional rankings are becoming less and less straightforward.

And the algorithm? It's a moving target. What gets you on top today could knock you down tomorrow. Google’s constantly tweaking the rules, often without telling anyone.

So… does that mean SEO is dead? Not even close. It just means we need to get smarter.

What Actually Impacts Your Rankings?

Let’s break it down. If your ranking drops (or just refuses to budge), it could be:

  • Something you did – maybe you updated your site and accidentally slowed it down, removed important keywords, or broke some code.

  • Something your competitor did – maybe they got serious about SEO, added a bunch of great content, improved their site, or started outspending you in paid campaigns.

  • Something Google did – they changed their ranking criteria (again), or launched a core update that shifted the playing field.

It’s a game of chess. Not checkers.

So What Can You Do?

Glad you asked. While no one can promise #1, there are things you can do to improve your visibility and get found by the right people. Here's how:

1. Be Smart About Keywords

Don’t just chase high-volume keywords with massive competition. Ask:

  • What are people really looking for when they search this?

  • Can we serve them better than anyone else?

  • Are there niche, long-tail terms we can own?

2. Think Beyond Rankings

Is your content showing up in featured snippets? Are you visible in local results or maps? Are you being recommended in AI-powered search tools? Visibility now means more than just being first.

3. Play the Long Game

Great content, strong technical SEO, fast-loading pages, consistent updates, and a great user experience—these still matter. A lot. But they take time.

4. Know Your Competition

If you’re trying to outrank a mega-brand with a multi-million-dollar marketing budget…maybe don’t. Or at least, get strategic. Find the gaps they’re ignoring. Speak directly to your audience in a way they can’t.

The Real Goal? Getting Found By the Right People

Yes, ranking #1 can be awesome. But being #1 for a keyword no one clicks on (or worse, that brings in the wrong traffic) is a waste of time and budget.

We’d rather see our clients:

  • Rank on page one for a mix of relevant, conversion-friendly terms

  • Show up where their ideal customers are looking

  • Build trust with useful, human-first content

  • Win the right traffic—not just the most

At Bonafide, we’re not here to sell you fairy tales. We’re here to help you build a search strategy that works in the real world. And yes, sometimes that means not being #1—and still winning big.
